Ronde van Drenthe 2024 overview

The Ronde van Drenthe is one of the longest-standing one-day races on the women’s WorldTour calendar and has typically fallen at the start of the Spring Classics season ever since its inception in 2007. Although the likes of Gent-Wevelgem, the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix are to come, the Ronde van Drenthe is a sought-after prize in its own right.

Taking to the start of the Ronde van Drenthe will be 12 Women’s WorldTeams, including SD Worx-Protime with the three-time defending champion, Lorena Wiebes. The Dutchwoman is the favourite to take a fourth successive title, but SD Worx-Protime will be challenged by the likes of Lidl-Trek, dsm-firmenich PostNL and UAE Team ADQ. Seven UCI Continental sides will round out the lineup, including Cofidis and Lifeplus Wahoo.

Beginning in Beilin and passing through the Drenthe province of the northern Netherlands, the Ronde van Drenthe will end on the slopes of the Col du Vam this year. This is where Mischa Bredewold picked up her European Championship title last September.

Ronde van Drenthe history

Built off the back of the eponymously named men’s race, the Ronde van Drenthe burst onto the scene in 2007 and almost immediately established itself as a prestigious semi-Classic. The race takes place in Drenthe, the Netherlands, in early March and since the arrival of other Spring Classics lies firmly sandwiched between Strade Bianche and Trofeo Alfredo Binda.

Its route features a mix of challenging pavé sectors and smooth expanses of tarmac, both of which are regularly battered by crosswinds blowing in from the North Sea. The route also contains several ascents of the infamous VAM-berg, an artificial climb that has been constructed on top of an old landfill site. These features make the race a perfect dress rehearsal for other big one-day races, like Gent Wevelgem and Ronde van Vlaanderen.

The home nation lies at the top of the Ronde van Drenthe’s winners list, having won 10 titles with seven different riders. Marianne Vos, nicknamed the GOAT (Greatest of all Time), has taken three of those 10 titles, and consecutively too (2011, 2012 and 2013). She currently holds the record for the most individual wins in this race.

Over the years, the race has finished in a variety of different ways, from bunch sprints to solo breakaways, but it has always favoured the Spring Classics specialists and those riders who pack a punchy finish. Lorena Wiebes, the winner of the last three editions, has won all three of her titles in bunch sprints. She’ll be crossing her fingers for another sprint finish this year as she takes aim at her fourth in a row.
