Stage 6 of the Giro d’Italia Donne was a punchy affair. After the queen stage yesterday on the Passo del Lupo, Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) came into the stage with a strong lead in the general classification and was looking to use her climbing to extend that lead further.
Nonetheless, as we saw yesterday with Elisa Longo Borgini, in Italian racing, nothing is guaranteed and possible crashes are lurking around any corner. Stage 6 proved to be no different as stage 5’s surprise winner Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-SRAM) and Urška Žigart (Jayco-AlUla) crashed out of the race early on.
Van Vleuten was able to avoid the crashes, however, and had enough firepower to go clear of the peloton on the penultimate climb. By the finish line, Van Vleuten won the stage and now holds a GC lead of over three minutes over Veronica Ewers (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB).
