It was another challenging day at the Giro d'Italia Donne as stage 4 featured thre back-to-back climbs in the finale of the 134km stage from Fidenza to Borgo Val di Toro.
An early breakaway of Amalie Dideriksen (Uno-X), Silvia Zanardi (Bepink) and Ilse Pluimers (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step) were away for much of the day, but their day was ended as the peloton hit the climbs.
Veronica Ewers (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) was the first to get away, soon joined by pink jersey Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek).
The three were able to hold off their GC competitors all the way to the line, with the newly-crowned Italian champion outsprinting her breakaway companions to take the win and move up on GC.
