Stage 5 of the Giro d'Italia Donne was the race's Queen stage, and it was a day that ended up being bookended by drama.
The racing was tough from the get-go, heading up the Passo del Lupo - the race's Cima Coppi - within the first 25km. Race leader Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) raced hard from the bottom of the climb, ripping things up early on.
From the top of the climbs, there were various attacks and regroupings, before the decisive move went as Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-SRAM) attacked with 25km to go.
As they tried to chase down the young German, Van Vleuten and Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) both suffered crashed on the final descent, with the latter hurt and losing enough time to end her hopes for the overall.
Up ahead, though, it was an emotional win for Niedermaier, who took her first WorldTour win in one of the sport's biggest races.
