Visma-Lease a Bike make history in Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico - GCN Racing News Show

Dan Lloyd casts an eye over the past week of bike racing, in which Matteo Jorgenson and Jonas Vingegaard brought much delight to the Dutch WorldTeam

With the 2024 racing season in full flight, last year's Grand Tours are but a memory for most, but still the reign of Visma-Lease a Bike continues in WorldTour stage races, with the Dutch superteam producing yet more history-making feats over the last week.

For the first time ever, the same team - in this case, Visma-Lease a Bike - managed to win both Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico in the same season. Both victories were taken rather handsomely in the end, as well, with Matteo Jorgenson standing atop the podium in the former and Jonas Vingegaard demolishing the field in the latter.

In the latest episode of the GCN Racing News Show, Dan Lloyd runs his finger over the results at both races in the past week, with a number of stand-out performances mentioned. Naturally, Jorgenson and Vingegaard are both in for praise, but so too are Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates), Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step).

The Soudal Quick-Step man is looking well-tuned ahead of his Tour de France debut in the summer and his performances even earned him an upgrade in our contenders power rankings! You can check those out below.

As for Del Toro and Milan, both of these up-and-coming riders enjoyed a race to remember at Tirreno-Adriatico. The former particularly caught Dan's eye with his powers of recovery in the mountains, whilst the latter even has Dan looking forward with half an eye to this weekend's Milan-San Remo.

Away from these two prestigious men's WorldTour stage races, there was the hotly-anticipated Miron Ronde van Drenthe for the women's peloton just a couple of days ago.

It was an edition that saw Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) claim a remarkable fourth victory in succession at this Dutch one-day race, but left Dan questioning whether or not dsm-firmenich PostNL played their cards right with Pfeiffer Georgi and Charlotte Kool.

Check out the video above for more of that discussion, not to mention the rest of the all-important news from this past week, including more discussion on Visma-Lease a Bike's eye-catching time trial helmets!

GCN's The Complete Fan's Guide To Pro Cycling

GCN Presents THE COMPLETE FAN’S GUIDE TO PRO CYCLING By Peter Cossins, the award-winning cycling author explains the different races, gives insight to the many types of rider and reveals the tactics that go into making today’s top level bike racing work. Professional cycling is amazing and unique. “The toughest sport” employs the latest technology and sports science, and demands the highest levels of effort and commitment – yet exists in a culture steeped in history, romance and legend, with language and conventions that transcend time. Superficially, bike races are simple: all the riders set off together and the first across the finish line wins. But scratch the surface and there are myriad stories, specialisms and sub-competitions to enrich our experience – and perhaps – confuse us. We’ll explain how it works, and what to look out for. A hugely respected cycling author, Peter has been writing professionally about our sport since the early 1990s, reporting on races, interviewing the sport’s biggest stars, and writing detailed and award-winning books to explain – and extend the appeal of – men’s and women’s road racing to a growing global audience. Here he shares his access and expertise with the GCN team and audience to bring a fresh insight in THE COMPLETE FAN’S GUIDE TO PRO CYCLING. “Peter has an incredible ability to explain and illuminate the complexities of top-level bike racing in an engaging but accessible way – THE COMPLETE FAN’S GUIDE TO PRO CYCLING will take you deeper into our sport than ever!” Dan Lloyd, GCN Director of Racing Product Details: Pages: 244 (120gsm) Size: 246mm (h) x 189mm (w) Cover: Paperback Cover Finish: 280gsm, with anti-scuff matte laminate and spot UV gloss finish Weight: 700g approx.
