After two gruelling days in the high mountains of the Pyrenees, the Vuelta a España returned to lower ground for the final day of the second week. However, it was far from flat, with stage 15 offering a punchy parcours in the Basque Country.
It was fertile terrain for a breakaway, and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) was up the road for a second day in a row following his collapse on the Col du Tourmalet on stage 13. This time, however, he was unable to pull off what would have been back-to-back stage wins.

In the end, it was 36-year-old Rui Costa (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) who took the spoils, getting the better of Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) in a three-up sprint.
There was a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse as Evenepoel's chasing group threatened to come back, but the former world champion Costa showed nerves of steel to claim the first Vuelta stage win of his career.
There was no GC action to speak of, with Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) retaining the red jersey of overall leader as the race pauses for its second and final rest day.
