Remco Evenepoel bounces back with brave mountain performance

Clock08:23, Sunday 10th September 2023

Stage 14 of the Vuelta a España was a day of redemption. Just 24 hours after his total collapse in the French Pyrenees which was his overall hopes shattered to the tune of 27 minutes, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) started like a man reinvigorated on Saturday.

After being the main aggressor of the long, drawn-out process to get a breakaway to stick, Evenepoel made it in the 24-strong move that went on the break-friendly stage. Rolling towards the finish in such a big group wasn't enough for him, though, and 80km from the finish he attacked with Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich).

The pair would work together all day, both committed to the move, but on the final climb it was each man to himself. As no one would have predicted at the start of the day, but which seemed obvious by the end of it, Evenepoel attacked his companion 4km from the top of the final climb and sailed to victory.

Bardet had to settle for second, but was full of admiration for his breakaway partner. By the time the GC riders arrived, over eight minutes down on the winner, there was no action to speak of, with all the favourites finishing on the same time to go into stage 15 with no change in the top 10.
