This week's World of Cycling episode is out now on GCN+
He is a seven-time green jersey winner, three-time world champion and one of the most enigmatic stars that our sport has ever produced. But he is also nearing the end of his time on a road bike, with his career on the road coming to an end in just a few months. As he looks towards pastures new in mountain biking, GCN’s fleet of experts looks back on the remarkable career of the great, Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies).
With his wheelies, ski goggles and once-long, flowing locks, Sagan has captured our attention for well over a decade, with his first Grand Tour stage victory coming at the Vuelta a España in 2011.
Since then, he has added three further stages at the Vuelta, two stages at the Giro d’Italia and no less than 12 stages at the Tour de France. That is not even to mention his points jersey at the 2021 Giro d’Italia, his Tour of Flanders win in 2016 and his Paris-Roubaix victory two years later.
To put it lightly, Peter Sagan has one of the greatest palmarès of the modern era and will rightly be remembered fondly, but what will his legacy look like? Despite his illustrious career, Sagan’s final years have seen him look a shadow of his former self, with his love for the sport seemingly dwindling. In light of this, we ponder the footprint that Sagan leaves on the sport in our latest World of Cycling episode.
Dan Lloyd is joined by William Fotheringham and Hannah Walker to discuss Sagan’s career in our studio, whilst our numbers aficionado Cillian Kelly is on hand to deliver a Sagan Stat Attack.
We also have an insight from Sagan’s friend and former teammate, Alan Marangoni, who lets us know his experiences of riding with Sagan in the peloton.
