Tour de Suisse, OVO Energy Women’s Tour & U23 Giro d’Italia | The Cycling Race News Show

Clock00:00, Monday 18th June 2018

It’s a busy Race News Show this week with the Tour de Suisse, the OVO Energy Women’s Tour, the Route d’Occitanie, the Tour of Slovenia and the U23 Giro d’Italia. We’ve got an update on the world of ultra-endurance with the Trans Am, RAAM, and the Tour Divide. We've also got a Brompton race, plus the End to End record here in the UK has been broken!

Let’s start though with the Tour de Suisse - this time last week we’d seen BMC take the opening TTT and Sagan the opening road stage, and BMC would continue to dominate from start to finish. Stefan Kung held on to the yellow jersey through stage 3, won by an impressive sprint from Sonny Colbrelli, and indeed through stage 4 too. King finally relinquished the leader’s jersey on the first mountain stage, which came on day 5, but he passed it onto the shoulders of teammate Richie Porte.

The OVO Women’s Tour may only be in its 5th year, but it has quickly established itself as the premier stage race on the women’s calendar. As ever, this year’s event was 5 days long and attracted many of the world’s top riders. Topping them all on day one was Jolien d’Hoore, remarkable stuff from the Belgian champion when you consider that she fractured her collarbone just three weeks ago in a crash on the track. It was a day of firsts on the last day, though - Lotta Lepisto of Cervelo Bigla took her first win of the season, and Caryn Rivera the first GC win of her career - quite surprising given her impressive palmares, and a sign that she is far more than a sprinter and classics rider.

Many of the big sprint hitters used the Tour de Slovenie as their final tune-up for the Tour, but a crash-marred finale to stage one meant that Cavendish, Ewan and Kittel were nowhere to be seen as Consonni crossed the line 1st. Their only other opportunity was the following day, but none of them could match the speed of Dylan Groenewegen, who I think could be the man to beat in the Tour sprints this year. Rigoberto Uran showed that 2 months back at home in Colombia was actually spent training, he won stage 3 in an uphill sprint against Daryl Impey, but he wasn’t able to go with local favourite Primoz Roglic on the Queen stage.
