If you own a Garmin Edge or another GPS-enabled cycling computer, you have a wide variety of tools at your disposal if you're serious about improving your fitness.

While measurements like time and speed are affected by a number of variables, you can make them much more reliable by repeating a certain climb or a particular circuit. You can measure your progress simply by recording the time it takes to repeat each section. Whether it's a pre-programmed lap you create yourself or a segment like you find on Strava, there are a lot of options.

The advantage of GPS is the ability to upload your files to online training diary software like Garmin Connect or TrainingPeaks. Over time you can build up a substantial amount of data from which you can measure your progress, and adapt future training accordingly.
