Clock00:00, Tuesday 9th October 2018

Welcome to the 300th GCN Show! Coming up this week, are happy riders quicker than grumpy riders? Plus, Hank goes extreme at the Red Hook Crit in Milan. Meanwhile, poor old Oscar Pujol is having his KOM’s stolen by Alberto Contador!

This week in the world of cycling, we learned that the American pro cycling scene could have an unlikely saviour. Former doper turned seller of dope, Floyd Landis, is using the money from the Lance Armstrong payout to set up a racing team. We also learned that whilst Paris Tours got a bit more extreme, it’s got nothing on the Red Hook Crits.

This past week also saw a very interesting piece of scientific research pop onto our radar, titled “The Influence of Pleasure and Attentional Focus on Performance and Pacing Strategies in Elite Individual Time Trials”. It’s more interesting than it sounds! In essence, it says that pleasure has a direct effect on your ability to pace an effort. So if you’re happy, you will pace better, therefore you can ride harder. Happy cyclists are faster, and grumpy cyclists are slower.

Another team was announced this week too, although with a launch date of 2020. The so-called Global Cycling Project promises to be a landmark moment as it will be the first Chinese World Team with hopes to ‘Bridge the gap from Europe to Asia’. And despite the name, no, we have nothing to do with it.

Away from racing, there’s been some Good news for European cyclists - we’re about to get more powerful! No increase in our FTP’s, unfortunately, but new legislation will allow eBikes to have a motor that produces of up to 1000w, and without the need to actually pedal!
