Published on February 7th 2018

Stage 2 of the Dubai Tour finishes in Ras Al Khaimar, home of the world’s longest zipwire. Who knew? With light winds and temperatures in the mid 20s, conditions were perfect for racing. Today’s route would take the riders away from SkyDive Dubai, through the Emirates of Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain, before ending up in an anticipated bunch sprint in Ras Al Khaimah 190km later. The day’s breakaway formed soon after the official start, and 3 riders from yesterday’s escape, Nathan Van Hooydonck, Charles Planet, an Mohammed Al Mansouri were joined by Nicholas Edet of Cofidis, Fuwen Xue of the Continental team Mitchelton-BikeExchange, and Yousif Mirza of UAE Emirates. With 10km to go the race was back together, with the two Frenchmen, Edet and Planet the last riders to be caught. Katusha-Alpecin had a full leadout train in place and were ramping up the speed to tee up Marcel Kittel in the bunch finish. However, the German lost his teammates in the run-in, and it was soon every man for himself in the finale. Wilier-Triestina’s Jakub Mareczko hit out early, with a fearsome trio of Kristoff, Viviani and Cavendish winding up just behind - Viviani had the edge and was able to hold off a very fast finishing Groenewegen. Astana’s Riccardo Minali grabbed third, with his teammate Magnus Cort Nielsen also up in the top 10.
