SRAM has issued a recall for aftermarket RED, Force, Rival and Apex shifters
Groupset manufacturer SRAM has issued a recall of aftermarket 12-speed shifters that were produced before 1 July, 2023. The top four tiers of the brand's groupsets are all affected, from the top-tier RED, through to Force, Rival and Apex.
It is understood at this time that the recall only affects units sold in North America, with units sold as part of a complete bike not included.
This comes just weeks after Shimano issued a North American and European recall for some of its Hollowtech II cranksets, which has quickly become one of the largest product recalls within the cycling industry.
The nature of the recall has been detailed in a service bulletin issued by SRAM. The official statement says that: "Excess thread lock on the shift-brake lever clamp bolt may result in the clamp not being tightened despite reaching recommended bolt torque. This may result in a shifter-brake lever which moves on the handlebar."
It is citing safety concerns as the reason behind the recall. This is because there is the potential for the shifter to come loose whilst riding, which could lead to an accident or injury.
A list of serial numbers affected has been issued by SRAM to allow both customers and retailers to check if they are in possession of an affected unit.

It is important to note that not all shifters in these product lines are affected. SRAM has said that any shifters that came fitted to a complete bike are not subject to the recall.
It looks like the remedial action to correct this issue is to replace the clamp bolt with kit number 11.7018.089.000 and discard the original bolt. The replacement bolt kit is being made freely available to SRAM retailers in order to correct the issue.
If you are in any doubt regarding the recall, get in touch with your nearest SRAM dealer to discuss if you have an affected unit that requires corrective action.
