The Untamed Lux World Cup CFR is to celebrate 20 years of the Cape Epic mountain bike race

Canyon has released a limited edition version of its flagship XC bike, the Lux World Cup CFR. Only 100 'Untamed' bikes will be made that feature a bespoke colourway and build kit to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Cape Epic mountain bike race.

The Cape Epic is one of the largest and most coveted cross-country mountain bike marathon events in the world. Taking place near Cape Town, South Africa, the race comprises a prologue and seven stages totalling 617km and over 16,500m of climbing. The race is run as a pairs event with the riders needing to stay with each other throughout each stage. Previous winners of the event include Nino Schurter, Annika Langvad and Christopher Blevins.

The colourway for the Lux World Cup CFR Untamed takes inspiration from the springbok, the national animal of South Africa where the Cape Epic takes place. In a press release Canyon said: “The springbok sums up what this bike is all about. Agile in harsh surroundings, lightning fast and fleet-footed, while remarkably durable given its lightweight, the springbok has evolved to thrive on the trails. The bike’s colourway reflects this inspiration with the Lux World Cup CFR Untamed coming in its Epic Springbok colourway.”

As well as a custom paint scheme inspired by the landscape and the nature surrounding the race, the Untamed also receives a unique build kit. The bike makes use of suspension from DT Swiss, a brand better known for its wheels, with the F232 fork offering 110mm of travel and is a benchmark in stiffness-to-weight ratio coming with all-white lowers that are exclusive to this build. Teaming up with the fork is an R232 shock that provides 100mm of rear wheel travel.

The suspension isn't the only DT Swiss component on the Untamed with the bike using the newly released XRC1200 carbon hookless wheelset. The D232 dropper post, which provides a modest 60mm of drop from the bar-mounted remote, rounds off the complement of DT Swiss componentry.

Former XC Marathon World Champion Andreas Seewald, of Canyon-Sidi MTB team, said: “The Lux World Cup Untamed works perfectly for me at the Cape Epic because it's such a transformer. I can grind it out in a super stable aero position but also send it on the unpredictable downhills with almost the feeling of an enduro bike. It always feels like the perfect choice.”

Finishing off the build is Canyon’s CP0036 XC one-piece bar and stem that has been designed with Canyon’s pro riders for the specific demands of XC riding. Its special ergonomic profile allows riders to adopt an aerodynamic position on straight, flat sections with an optional hand position closer to the stem. Shimano’s top-tier XTR groupset takes care of shifting and braking with the latest M9100 groupset and lightweight two-piston brakes.

Pricing and availability

Only 100 Canyon Lux World Cup CFR Untamed are available exclusively direct from Canyon from Thursday 21 March in a size run from XS to XL with a retail price of €7,999.
