The second UCI Gravel World Championships take place in Veneto on October 7-8

The provisional start lists for the upcoming UCI Gravel World Championships in Veneto, Italy have been confirmed. Taking place this weekend, October 7-8, the elite men’s and women’s races have attracted a mix of US and European gravel specialists, as well as some star names from the road racing scenes.

Both defending champions from the inaugural Gravel Worlds are on the start list, with Gianni Vermeersch ready to try to hold onto his rainbow jersey, whilst Pauline Ferrand-Prévot is officially registered but her presence is uncertain after contracting Covid-19 last week.

The road stars like Wout van Aert, Matej Mohorič, Demi Vollering, and recently-crowned European champion Lorena Wiebes will attract a lot of attention, but there are also some big gravel names, such as Sofia Gomez Villafañe and Caroline Schiff, whilst star male rider Keegan Swenson is not on the provisional list, but is expected to ride.

Recently-retired Annemiek van Vleuten was due to compete, but has had to pull out, suffering from a foot injury. Her Movistar teammate Alejandro Valverde will be in action, though, showing off the highly anticipated new Canyon gravel bike.

More on the Gravel World Championships:

The elite women’s race will take place on Saturday over an 140km course, whilst the men’s race is on Sunday, on a 169km course.
