For the second time in as many days, a young rider came to the fore in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, with Ricarda Bauernfeind (Canyon-SRAM) soloing to victory on stage 5.
It was another exciting day of racing as the sprinters were soon dispatched in favour of aggressive action. Without the presence of Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx) - who left the race ahead of stage 5 through illness - there was little appetite in the peloton to decide the stage in a bunch sprint. Instead, the peloton worked to bring back to the breakaway and tee up an exciting finale.
The hard work of Canyon-SRAM was rewarded with the catch of the breakaway and the eventual attack of their young star, Bauernfeind. The German attacked with over 35km to ride and despite being joined briefly by Israel-Premier Tech Roland’s Claire Steels, Bauernfeind was able to show the British rider a clean pair of heels and quickly developed a gap upwards of 50 seconds.
With the group of favourites none the wiser as to who should commit to chasing the Canyon-SRAM prodigy, Bauernfeind was able to ride alone to the finish and take the biggest victory of her fledgling career - moving into the top 10 on GC in the process. Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) came home fourth and retains her lead in the yellow jersey heading into stage 6.
