Watch: Giro d'Italia Donne stage 2 highlights

Annemiek van Vleuten solos to stage victory and first pink jersey of race

Clock17:00, Saturday 1st July 2023

After the cancellation of the stage 1 time trial, the first stage victory and pink jersey was up for grabs on the second day of the Giro d'Italia Donne, starting in Bagno a Ripoli and finishing in Marradi.

With just one big climb on the route, the Passo della Colla in the final 30km, it was hard to predict what kind of stage it would be, and whether the GC battle would start already or a breakaway would be allowed up the road.

Susanne Andersen (Uno-X) and Irene Mendez (Bizkaia Durango) were out front most of the day, but were caught on the final climb as the favourites decided it would be a day for them.

Despite being only the second day of the race, Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) is never one to shy away from an attack, and put in a big solo effort on the climb to distance her competitors and hold her lead all the way to the line, taking the stage win and the pink jersey.
