Stage 1 of la Vuelta a España 2018 is an 8.8km time trial in Malaga. The course features a 1km climb, plus some difficult corners. Although it's not likely to decide the overall, riders like Nairo Quintana, Alejandro Valverde and Fabio Aru will want to start well.

With a stacked field of overall contenders including Fabio Aru, Vincenzo Nibali, David de la Cruz, Alejandro Valverde, Richard Carapaz, Miguel Angel Lopez, Richie Porte, Michal Kwiatkowsky and Steven Kruijswijk to name but a few, the 2018 Vuelta a España could be the most hotly contested Grand Tour of the year.
In typical Vuelta-style, the route is brutal, with numerous summit finishes, steep gradients and long, hard days in the mountains. So, while it's no-doubt important to start the race as well as possible, the Stage 1 time trial in the centre of Malaga could well be one of the simpler days for the overall favourites at this year's Vuelta. The stage starts along the pier, before doubling back and climbing to a vantage point above the city. The descent isn't without complications, before further twists and turns take the riders back to centre of the city for the finish.
