The Weirdest Rules Of The Tour de France | GCN Show Ep. 340

Clock00:00, Tuesday 16th July 2019

This week in the world of cycling, we learned that Tour de France riders have to be prepared for every eventuality. Including avoiding large umbrellas. We also learned, weirdly, that the sport of BMX turned 50 last week. Plus we discuss the weirdest rules of the Tour de France - they're certainly bizarre!

The 10th July, 1969 was the first ever BMX race, held at Palms Park in Santa Monica, California. Loyal GCN fans will no doubt be waiting for the BMX videos on GCN, and for that we can only apologise.

In among feel good clips like that, all the amazing racing and the fantastic tech at the Tour, there are always a few stories that raise eyebrows. For me it was the images of the race commissaires with a contraption that allowed them to measure riders socks.

Yes, it’s official, the race referees from the international governing body of cycling, the UCI were out in force making sure that riders socks conformed to the regulations. Complete with their Austin Montego windscreen wiper to measure them?! Is that the weirdest rule of the Tour de France? We’re not so sure The UCI does love giving out fines and washing them down with a hot cup of steaming rules…

It’s worth noting that for added complexity, these fines are always in Swiss francs, because the UCI is based there.

Which means they always appear to be completely random, non round amounts when converted into pounds, euros or dollars?!
