Route planning - Make it slightly harder than they are perhaps going to excel on. Firstly, simple, and not particularly devious. Take charge of the route. If you have a riding pal that is stronger on the flat than you, it is almost inevitable that they will want to go on a flat ride. That way they can force the tempo at their strength. So, turn the tables on them by taking control of the route yourself and plan one to your strengths instead.

Tell jokes - Here is another great trick, If you are blessed with being that person that can make anyone laugh, use that to your advantage. A well-placed joke can buy you a bit of extra breathing space. Tell a joke at the bottom of the climb something that is really going to take the breath from there lungs and the power from their legs.

Offer food at the bottom of a climb - This is a firm favourite. I’ve used this many times to my benefit over the years, but the trick is to offer a bite of food that sounds so delicious, they really can’t refuse. And if this delicious sounding morsel of food turns out to be unbearably dry, then all the better!
