First up, the road season kicked off proper last week with a strong international field lining up for the Women’s Santos Tour Down Under. The 4-day event kicked off with a sprint finish on day one, a sprint won by Letizia Paternoster, giving the Trek Segafredo women’s team their first victory in their first professional race. The 19-year-old from Italy is a 5-time world champion on the track and put her speed to good use in outkicking Sarah Roy to the line.

The GC, though, was pretty much sealed already on day 2. Winner of this race for the past 2 years, Amanda Spratt, put in a dominant display up Mengler Hill, making it look easy as she took the stage win by 39 seconds over her Mitchelton Scott teammate Lucy Kennedy, and enjoying an even greater advantage overall courtesy of the 10 seconds bonus she picked up on the line.

The men’s Tour Down Under will start tomorrow, Tuesday, but we’ve already had the traditional warm-up race, the People’s Choice Classic. Caleb Ewan getting his season and his time with Lotto Soudal off the best possible start, outsprinting Peter Sagan to the line. Unfortunately, a late crash took Elia Viviani out of the running, but no doubt we’ll see the three of them battle it out on a stage or two of the main race this week. Incidentally, we’ve got live coverage of the Tour Down Under, available to most of Europe, plus worldwide highlights post-race, so keep your eye on our Facebook page for all of that - it’s sure to be an exciting race, with the likes of Richie Porte, Mike Woods, Wout Poels, Diego Ulissi, Michael Valgren and George Bennett taking part, plus defending champ Daryl Impey, riding for Mitchelton Scott.

Another man to potentially watch out for within that team is Luke Durbo Durbridge, who managed to get the better of World Time Trial champion Rohan Dennis at the Australian Time Trial champs early last week. Durbridge started his career as a very accomplished time triallist but has since developed into a strong all-rounder and classics rider. It’s been some time since he got the better of Dennis in a time trial, in fact, it’s been 6 years and 13-time trials to be exact, according to our favourite cycling statistician, Cillian Kelly.
