Super Bike Vs. Mid-Range Bike | GCN Tech Geek Edition

Clock00:00, Sunday 8th April 2018

If you've seen our mid-range bike versus super bike test over on GCN you'll have noticed that the difference between the two bikes was really quite small, so why is that? Si takes a closer look...

Firstly, let’s quickly deal with what’s the same. The gears. Well, clearly they are not literally the same, Shimano’s Dura Ace and 105 groupsets are different in many respects, but I would just like to draw your attention to one key similarity.

The difference between these two is not all that significant, not compared to body mass anyway. The super bike is 7.3kg, the mid range bike is 8.4kg. SO what happens out on the road?

Well, not very much really. You can feel a difference, lighter bikes respond differently. Although it’s weird, when you actually look into the science of lighter wheels specifically, the oft quoted “lower rotating weight” is something of a myth. It is unmeasurable, and even on paper would account for fractions of seconds difference in a like for like acceleration from a standing start.

How do you think we could run our blind test to find out if super bikes really are super?
