Let’s kick off with getting everything set up for the first ride. Ideally, you want to get your bike set up before the day of your commutes as getting all the prep out of the way beforehand will make it easier and more enticing for you to actually get on the bike! When kitting your bike out for winter commuting you will want to think of the following items:
Mudguards (full with flaps/homemade flaps/temporary/ass saver). Winter tends to be wetter and dirtier, so staying dry from the ground up will help keep the worst of the dirt off you. If nothing else, you will keep your bottles clean!
Lights + Spares (dynamo hub/light makes it infinitely easier) Not only do you need to be seen, but you may also need to see with the lights on your bike. Being visible and having sufficient battery power is crucial to winter commuting. Shorter daylight hours and on the whole, duller conditions mean visibility should be top of your priorities!
Tyres -Have a good look over them regularly and consider the more puncture resistant options that are available. This will keep you rolling with added puncture protection in conditions that make tyres more susceptible to flats, keep an eye on tyre pressures too!

In general, you should keep your bike well maintained and in a good overall condition, this will eliminate the risks of having to make any repairs on the roadside in what are usually less than ideal conditions!

Team up with mates to keep you motivated! Having a pre-organised arrangement will help you stick to the plan of commuting. If you back out of this you are no longer letting just yourself down, but others too.

Keeping a set of work clothes at your workplace is a great place to start! And to go with that it may well be a good idea to leave a few spares at work, your kit may not dry out in time for the ride home and there really is nothing worse than putting on wet or dirty cycling kit for a second ride. Even some old newspaper to dry out your shoes will make life much more comfortable!
