E-bikes are pretty hot at the moment, but not as hot as this one which burst into flames while being ridden up the corkscrew road in Australia. Gary Ryan, 79, suffered burns when his e-bike caught fire while being ridden. A video of the incident was broadcast on Channel 9 news Australia. Flames from the e-bike then proceeded to cause Ryan’s co2 canisters to explode too. Ryan’s bike was said to be fitted with an aftermarket e-bike motor.

In what could be described as a very clever marketing move by Specialized, Peter Sagan took to the start line of the Down Under Classic, not on his usual Carbon Fibre S-Works, but an Aluminium Allez Sprint. It’s cool because he came second in the down under classic criterium to Caleb Ewan. Draw from that what you will. Would he have won on a carbon bike? Or does this show you don’t actually need a carbon bike!?

It’s January and following the post-Xmas excess, many people start looking to get into better shape. The gyms are notoriously packed in Jan and gadgets like fitness trackers and heart rate monitors are all the rage. Can tech help us lose weight and get fitter? Well… Some cool research was reported recently - Researchers Purdue University in collaboration with the University of Texas and the Idaho national laboratory has synthesized Tellurium Nano Wires which display a high piezoelectric response. Tellurium is a rare metal in the periodic table in the same group as sulfur and selenium. It has a special structure resulting in a piezoelectric effect - which means electrostatic polarisation resulting from mechanical stress placed upon it.
