Dubai Tour 2018 | Stage 4 Race Report

Clock00:00, Friday 9th February 2018

Today was set to be the decider at this year’s Dubai Tour - Stage 4 took the riders 172km towards the Hatta Dam, with the final steep 200m pitch to the line topping out at 17%. It’s enough to force some time splits - would there be a chance to overhaul Elia Viviani at the top of the standings? It’s clear he was keeping his cards close to his chest.

Carpenter and Dunne cracked with on a short climb 12km out with the lead at 1:30. Further down the slope, the pace was heating up with the likes of Kittel and Groenewegen struggling at the back. All the while young McNulty, the US Under 23 time trial champion and just 14 seconds down on was coming close not only to an incredible stage win but potentially the overall as well!

He didn’t seem to believe it either as he made the right hand turn up to the Hatta Dam. He fought as hard as he could, but 170km out front was really starting to take its toll. And here came a swarming peloton. They passed poor McNulty like he was standing still just 20 metres from the line, with Sonny Colbrelli mastering the punishing gradients to finish first. He revealed in post race interviews that a mechanical problem at the foot of the climb left him stuck on the 53 chainring, which makes that effort all the more impressive.

Elia Viviani kept in touch with the front of the race, sixth over the line, and he keeps his lead by just 2 seconds from Cort-Nielsen. Colbrelli jumps to third thanks to that stage win.
