Sand sections are one of the biggest challenges in cyclo-cross.

Sand sections often force even the best cyclo-cross pros like Sven Nys off their bikes. While you might not encounter sand on every ride you do, the skills required to ride sand are transferable to nearly any loose surface that you will ride over.
Sandy cyclo-cross races like Koksijde are challenging because sand is an ever-changing surface. Line choice, body position on the bike and moving with the bike are all vital.
