5 Things Cyclists Can Learn From Triathletes

Clock00:00, Wednesday 6th December 2017

We often like to make fun of our triathlon cousins, but there are a number of things that cyclists could stand to learn from triathletes. Dan takes a look at a few here.

"Clip-ons": These are unquestionably more aerodynamic than riding in your normal road position. If you're going out for a solo ride, especially if you're looking for some KOMs, we don't really see any reason not to use them.

Clothing: Triathletes tend to wear fewer clothes than us cyclists, rarely wearing socks, and with their shoulder often on show. As to whether you want to copy them, well that is up to you!

Hydration: In the pursuit of aerodynamic perfection, triathletes rarely have their bottles on the down- or seat-tube of their bike. If you are regularly competing in long-distance time trials, then why not try one of their drinking solutions, assuming the governing body allows it.

Storage: Top tube bags really do have their merits, especially for beginner cyclists. It is so much easier to get your food from your top tube, than reaching round into your back pockets.

Training: Triathletes train a lot, competing in three sports simply requires an increased training load. Should we try and emulate them? Maybe not, but we could definitely try and copy their commitment.
