After last week where we learned not to expect too much from Geraint Thomas for a few weeks after some serious post Tour celebrating, this week we became even more concerned as he seems to have become a rockstar. that was quite the reception wasn’t it? Nice to see that cycling is *almost* mainstream. It certainly wasn’t when we started out! It’s got us thinking, it is a long time ago that we started bike riding, over 25 years for each of us. what do we know now that we really wish we’d learnt a lot earlier.
We’ll start with news not just of cycling shorts, but an entire skinsuit. At the recent European Championships, dutch cyclist Jos Van Emden announced on Twitter that he would be racing naked as his suitcase had gone missing. Unlike fellow countryman Tom Dumoulin at the Tour who similarly lost his gym kit and had a new one quickly knocked up by his team sponsors on a Saturday morning, Van Emden eventually had to borrow his team mate, Ellen Van Dijk’s instead. Unfortunately he couldn’t make it go as fast. Van Dijk took the win, Van Emden finished 8th.
Simon Gerrans is transferring to another career entirely, he announced his retirement last week. Longo Borghini to Trek Factory Racing, Caleb Ewan has confirmed that he will be at Lotto Soudal for the next two years, whilst moving away from that team is Marcel Sieberg to Bahrain Merida.
