The Ineos Grenadiers rider kicked off his 2024 road season at the Volta ao Algarve this week riding a familiar Pinarello in its new livery

Tom Pidock is a rider who can seemingly turn his hand to any discipline on two wheels with ease. Just a handful of days after taking a win at the Shimano MTB Super Cup, he made his road season debut putting the 2024 Pinarello Dogma F into action at the Volta ao Algarve, which finishes on Sunday.

The Dogma F is the only road bike available to the Ineos Grenadiers with the team being part of the WorldTour contingent that uses one ‘all-rounder’ style bike instead of separate climbing and aero bikes. This means that the Dogma F has to strike the balance between being competitive in both its overall system weight as well as its aerodynamic performance characteristics, something that typically has bikes hitting the scales well above the UCI’s 6.8kg minimum weight limit.

Same bike, fresh paint

For 2024, the Pinarello Dogma F chassis has remained as it was last year, but cosmetically it is all change for the Ineos Grenadiers. Although it might not be a significant change in overall design, the bikes for 2024 feature a black to orange fade, deviating from last year's navy blue to red fade.

The orange portion of the frame has also been reduced from last year with the frame mostly black. Although this is largely an aesthetic decision, it does come with the added benefit of shedding a few extra grams from the weight of the frameset, Pinarello claims.

Tight gearing for fast racing

Pidcock looks to be bucking the trend of a lot of his professional comrades opting to run the tightest ratio cassette Shimano offers for the Dura-Ace groupset. Typically, riders have been opting for the wider 11-34 tooth cassette giving them an easy climbing gear even when paired to the now-typical 54/40 crankset of Shimano-sponsored teams.

Pidcock, however, has decided instead to stick to the 11-30 tooth cassette that has more consistent spacing between the gears allowing him to sit closer to his ideal cadence at all times.

A saddle position right on the limit

Interestingly on the bike fit front, Pidcock has his Prologo Scratch M5 saddle mounted to the seat post in the most extreme position that the saddle is certified for.

Most riders tend to move their saddle forward trying to put them directly on top of the bottom bracket and giving them a similar position to that of a TT bike. Pidcock’s position however is going in the opposite direction to this, hinting that he might find himself between two frame sizes and has opted to run the smaller frame size.

Latex inner tube transponder mounting

We have seen Ineos Grenadiers mounting the race transponder behind the fork leg of their TT bikes in the past in an attempt to conceal the obligatory equipment from the wind. Pidcock’s road bike, however, has it mounted in the more traditional location on the side of the fork. The team has done away with zip ties, though, and instead mounted the transponder with a section of latex inner tube.

The small section of the inner tube smooths over the profile in an attempt to make the fork and transponder form one fluid shape. Sometimes the best solutions are also some of the cheapest.

Finishing kit

As one of Shimano’s premier teams, a lot of the finishing kit on the Ineos bikes is from Shimano, including their C50 carbon wheels that are running Continental GP5000 tubeless tyres. Pidcock is also using a set of Shimano Dura-Ace pedals fitted to his Dura-Ace power meter cranks.

The cockpit comes courtesy of Pinarello’s in-house brand MOST with the Talon Ultralight one-piece bar and stem shrouded in the brand's Ultragrip EVO bar tape.

Finishing off the bike are two bottle changes from team sponsor Elite. Pidcock is using the carbon fibre Leggero cages to keep him hydrated through a day's racing.
