The updates focus on new rim profiles and freehub design

UK-based wheel manufacturer Hunt has announced that its carbon disc road wheelsets are receiving an update to bring them up to date with current trends.

The carbon Disc range (previously titled the Carbon Aero Disc) will be available in three depths 30, 40 and 50mm deep. The update to the rims sees the internal rim width grow to 22mm with the new profile compatible with ETRTO tyres from 25mm to 50mm in width. The external rim width sits at 30mm, a nod to the growing trend of the use of wider 28mm tyres and above.

In a press release ahead of the updates being released Hunt said: “The design and specification updates were made to meet the evolving needs of riders with a more capable and versatile range of go-to upgrade wheelsets, built to reduce weight while improving acceleration and aerodynamics, increasing overall speed.”

The new Carbon Disc 50 wheelset is claimed to offer riders an eight-watt saving when compared to a traditional 25mm aluminium wheelset. This comes from testing carried out by GST WindKanal by Ernst Pfeiffer with the results being derived via MWAD (Mavic wind averaged drag).

Another update to the wheels is the new HUNT H_Ratchet 36T SGL hub that uses a 10-degree angle of engagement.

“The single-side ratchet drive system is designed to handle high torque loads, suitable for both road and gravel single or double chainring drivetrains, and wide-range cassettes.”

Hunt has stated that the new wheelsets were tested extensively to ensure their durability. This also included a bust pressure test at 150% of the state maximum psi of the rims. Although the rims are ETRTO tyre compatible the rims themselves retain the hooked design rather than opting for the seemingly more controversial hookless design.

The wider rim profile is also a nod to the tyres unpaved credentials with the brand certifying the wheelsets for gravel use.

"The wider dimensions and hub set add versatility to the range, allowing riders to take the benefits of their carbon wheel upgrade on new routes and rougher surfaces, from broken tarmac to gravel," Hunt states.
