AI technology will help offer the e-bike rider route guidance

Artificial intelligence has gradually crept into more and more corners of our lives over the last 12 months.

It’s now the case that one in three UK workers fear having their job taken over by AI, according to a recent report.

But could the technology be about to take over our bikes too? E-bike manufacturer Urtopia is hoping so.

The brand recently debuted its flagship Fusion e-bike at the Las Vegas tech convention CES 2024 and boasted that it is fully integrated with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT has been around for just over a year, with the free-to-use AI system virtually able to tackle any task you throw at it – from writing computer code to saving students’ bacon when an essay deadline is imminent.

Now though, ChatGPT will help Urtopia Fusion e-bike riders to “explore new routes, get real-time information, and even engage in entertaining conversations,” the manufacturer reveals.

What they mean by entertaining conversations, we’re really not sure. Nor are we certain that it’s exactly safe for a morning commute into town.

That being said, the bike, dubbed “the world’s first dual battery, dual motor e-bike”, comes fitted with plenty of mod-cons aside from its AI intervention.

An e-bike with GPS tracking

Its unique system called “Jarvis” allows for the electric bike to be powered on via a smart ring while music can be played via a built-in speaker.

On top of this, if someone takes a fancy to your €3,999 e-bike (or €4,999 if you opt for the premium assisted shifting model) and decides to ride off on it, the bike is connected to 4G and uses GPS to keep track of the bike’s location at all times.

The reason for the hefty price tag might lie in the carbon fibre frame and dual 540Wh battery fitted to the Fusion. It offers 120km of range, which can be upped to 200km if the 360W battery extender is added on.

The standard model comes with a Shimano CUES derailleur while the premium CVT version features Enviolo’s stepless shifter, making gear changes a thing of the past.

A 95Nm mid-drive motor allows for a top speed of 25km/h, while an air suspension fork means there’s also 100mm of travel for when the terrain becomes less smooth.

Only time will tell whether this AI-integrated e-bike becomes the norm, or even when it will go on sale. One thing's certain though, this article was definitely not written by AI.
