The Orox has been specifically designed to handle the demands of carrying heavy loads over rough terrain

Bicycle manufacturer Tern has added a new e-cargo bike to its range called the Orox. This joins its GSD model as a more rugged and off-road focussed option. The new bike uses Bosch’s Performance Line CX motor system to provide assistance to the rider, making carrying heavy loads considerably easier.

“Six years ago, we introduced the GSD with the belief that a compact and easy-to-ride bike capable of carrying passengers and cargo would get people out of their cars and onto bikes,” stated Josh Hon, Tern Team Captain.

“We were right, and we love seeing all the amazing things people are doing with the GSD in crowded cities. But we also realised that there are plenty of places people want to go that are unpaved. And they want to bring their gear. For those trips, we made the Orox.”

“Combining the ruggedness of a mountain bike, versatility of a trekking bike, and utility of a cargo bike, Orox provides riders the freedom to craft their own unique experiences.”

The designers at Tern have created a bike that should be capable of turning its hand to any type of adventure. Although the bike comes as standard with either 27.5 or 29-inch wheels the Orox can also accommodate 26 x 5-inch fat bike tyres within the frame and fork. Keeping everything from the rider to their cargo protected is a set of heavy-duty mudguards. The batteries for the e-bike system are housed in an insulated frame pack keeping them within the operational temperature range when temperatures begin to drop.

Certified for heavy loads

The defining quality of any good cargo bike is its load capacity. The Orox has two stated values, one for on-road and one for off-road. As you might expect the on-road gross vehicle weight capacity of 210kg is a little higher than the 180kg that it is certified for off-road. With safety in mind, Tern chose not to spec the Orox with a suspension fork, which could have increased its off-road credentials, as there are no forks on the market that are certified to the maximum capacity of the Orox.

Although there are only two frame sizes available, Tern is confident that the right configurations allow riders from 155cm through to 195cm to find the right fit for them.

Build kits and pricing

Tern will be offering the Orox in two builds: The S12 featuring Shimano XT 1x12 or the R14 featuring 14-speed Rohloff Speedhub and Gates belt drive.

The Bosch system powering the bike is capable of an impressive 300km range when two fast swap 800Whr batteries are fitted in the battery frame pack. With easy access, carrying additional batteries is an option for extending the range of the bike even further.

Tern will be offering the Orox from €6,799 / £5,900 with the specifics of each build differing slightly depending on the region of purchase.

Keep an eye out for an article coming soon in which we get to put the Orox to the test and see just what it is capable of.
