Users of the Fitness+ platform on Apple will be able to make use of power and cadence metrics
Apple has added both cadence and power metrics to the cycling workouts feature within its premium Fitness+ app, for users recording activities with their Apple watch or mobile device and a compatible power meter.
The new feature will use the device's Bluetooth connection to pair with a power meter in the same fashion that you would connect with a cycling-specific computer. Once you have connected you can go ahead and select a cycling workout from the app and begin.
Data will then be available to view once the workout has been completed.
Currently in this version there is no live visibility of the power and cadence data that it is recording, however this is likely to be resolved in a further update. This definitely is still in development as it is not that usable, with some workouts quoting target cadences, however you would need to use another external device to view cadence in real time.
Fitness+ is a platform that prescribes coached sessions to users on a subscription basis, so the extra feature will only be available to paying users.
This addition is not yet available to the full-release operating systems, instead if you want to use these features you will need to be running the public beta software versions WatchOS 10 on Apple Watch, or iOS 17 for mobile devices.
It is likely that a fully production-ready version of the Fitness+ app will be available around mid-September when the new iPhone model is expected to be released.
