Stage 8: Spoleto – Prati di Tivo (152km)
Following the crucial stage 7 time trial, stage 8 will be the next big test for the general classification contenders with a big climbing stage packing 3,850m of elevation into just 152km of racing.
This stage ventures into the peaks of the Apennines in the Abruzzo region and is a relentless day, up and down all day before finishing atop the Prati di Tivo climb. In the first 40km, the peloton will tackle the 16.3km Forca Capistrello, a dragging climb with some steep sections. It’s them up and down towards the second categorised climb, the 8.4km ascent to Croce Abbio.
Whilst none of the climbs are huge – none of them trouble 1,500m of elevation – there are six different categorised and uncategorised climbs throughout the stage that will sap the strength of the peloton before the big test that comes at the end of the day.
The second summit finish of the race will come at the top of the 14.5km climb to the finish at Prati di Tivo, which tops out at 1,450m above sea level. This is not the steepest of climbs, but it is relentless with 7-8% grades all the way to the line and maximum ramps of 12%, as the peloton climbs up in the shadow of the towering Gran Sasso d’Italia, a 2,900m-high peak that looms over central Italy.
Whether the stage comes down to a GC battle or the breakaway contests the win remains to be seen, but either way, the favourites will light it up on the slopes of the finale. Without question, stage 8 will be a crucial early test in the race for the pink jersey.
