Stage 20: Alpago – Bassano del Grappa (184km)

As is tradition, the final stage is a precession around Rome so stage 20 will be the last day of proper racing in the 2024 Giro d’Italia. If the GC isn’t already set in stone, it certainly will be after this – or completely turned on its head, with a 184km stage featuring 4,200m of climbing, all coming on two attempts at the fearsome Monte Grappa.

The race starts in Alpago up the road from Monte Grappa, with a flat 88km run to the start of the circuit of the climb that the race will take on twice. After that, it’s simple but by no means easy: two runs up the steep side of Monte Grappa, which drags up for 18.1km averaging 8.1%, before a long descent with a short but very steep 1.5km, 9% climb interrupting the plunge back down to the end of the lap. The second summit of the Grappa comes with 31km of racing left with a short 5km flat run to the line coming after the downhill.

While it seems unlikely that the race for the general classification will still be alive, if it is, the Grappa circuit could be the scene for an upset, even if the climb is a bit far from the finish to make a huge impact.
