Stage 14: Castiglione delle Stiviere – Desenzano del Garda (ITT) (31.2km)
After a few transitional stages that bring the race north to the major set pieces of the final week, stage 14 rings in the weekend with a second significant time trial.
Running from Castiglione delle Stiviere to Desenzano del Garda, the course is slightly shorter than the stage 7 time trial at 31.2km and does not have a final climb to shake up proceedings, with a largely flat parcours making it an easier day for the specialists against the clock. However with an additional week of racing in the legs this second time trial could bring about a different result and provide some more intrigue in the general classification.
Nevertheless, it’s essentially a prologue to the most difficult stage of the race, stage 15, which will close the second week – so we might expect the GC contenders to keep their powder dry here. Timechecks will be at the 7.8km and 23.2km mark as the road undulates towards the shore of Lake Garda, with the second half of the stage almost entirely sloping downhill.
