Stage 13: Riccione – Cento (179km)
In every Giro d’Italia there seems to be one stage in Emilia-Romagna where the profile is entirely flat. In this Giro, that stage comes on stage 13, a 179km route starting in Riccione, heading past Bologna and accumulating a grand total of 150 metres of altitude gain along the way. It should be a quiet day for the GC favourites, with the maglia rosa contenders able to rest their legs ahead of stage 14's time trial, and a sure-fire sprint finish - so let’s hope for some nice aerial shots to liven up the preceding 170km.
There shouldn’t be much drama along the way to Centro, as the peloton will speed down mostly straight roads, dotted with occasional street furniture in residential areas, and tackle a fairly uncomplicated finale of sweeping bends and a bridge over the river Rhine. One pivotal section to look out for will be a likely fight for positioning in the final kilometre, with a key right turn coming shortly before the finish in Centro.
