Stage 10: Pompei – Cusano Mutri (Bocca della Selva) (142km)
With a rest day between stages 9 and 10 giving the riders a brief respite, and the chance to brush up on their history in Pompeii, the Giro d’Italia then delves right back into the action. From the race’s southernmost point the peloton heads northwards again, returning to the Apennines with a short, punchy 142km stage ending with another summit finish at Bocca della Selva. The stage begins along the coast in Pompeii and tracks northeast with a rolling parcours, including several short uncategorised climbs, a category 2, and the category 1 summit finish atop Cusano Mutri.
The 6.1km climb up to Camposauro in the middle of the stage reaches 13% at its steepest point, but that’s only the aperitif for the GC contenders as they test their post-rest day legs. All eyes will instead be on the final climb up to Cusano Mutri.
While not the toughest in this year’s race, at 17.9km it’s a long slog, pitching upwards at a 5.6% average gradient but with two separate extended sections of steeper climbing. The first comes in the first 6km, which averages at 6.1%, before a short 2% section breaks up the climbing ahead of a 5.5km, 7.2% haul to the line. That ramps up to 10% at its toughest point, making this a brutal day at the office for the pink jersey contenders, and one which the sprinters will be relieved to get over in one piece.
