Stage 1: Venaria Reale – Torino (140km)

The 2024 Giro d’Italia begins with a level of difficulty and intensity that is rare in three-week racing with the Grande Partenza in the Piemonte region of northwest Italy. Torino is the site of the first of the opening stages with the start and finish of stage 1 both in the city.

The 140km opening stage with 1,850m of climbing promises to be explosive with the race taking on a lap around the hills to the east of Torino. The main two points of contention for the peloton vying for the first maglia rosa of the race will be the climbs of Superga (8.2km, 5.3%) and the Colle Maddalena (7km, 6.8%), the latter of which tops out with 22km left in the stage.

In the final, the climbing continues which will likely foil the sprint effort as a 1km punch maxing out at 16% comes with just 4km left to race in the stage. This will offer one last chance for attacks to come from puncheurs and general classification riders alike. After the crest of the last ramp, all that is left is a quick descent through the streets of Torino and a dash to the line to decide the first leader of the 2024 Giro d’Italia.
