Luke Plapp appears to be heading for an early exit from Ineos Grenadiers

GCN understands that there are ongoing talks over the future of Ineos Grenadiers' Luke Plapp, with the Australian champion possibly heading to Team Jayco AlUla in 2024.

According to sources, the negotiations are close to completion, with a planned announcement set to take place in the coming weeks.

The news is of great significance due to the fact that the Australian rider currently has a contract with Ineos Grenadiers for next season. However, according to our sources within the peloton, the rider is finalising a mutual termination of his three-year deal with the British team.

There are no other teams involved, with only Jayco AlUla on Plapp’s radar.

Plapp, 22, signed for Ineos Grenadiers at the start of 2022 and is regarded as one of the best Australian talents to emerge in recent years. This year he defended his Australian road race champion title and finished second overall at the UAE Tour. In 2022 he made his Grand Tour debut at the Vuelta a España, and produced a string of top-10 results in week-long stage races.

His arrival at Jayco AlUla would improve the team’s overall roster. A former track star, Plapp has yet to reach his full potential on the road and Jayco could see the homegrown talent as a possible successor to Grand Tour leader Simon Yates in years to come.

The Australian would not be the first rider to leave Ineos Grenadiers this year, with Pavel Sivakov, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Dani Martinez and Ben Tulett all set to leave at the end of the current campaign. Ineos Grenadiers are currently in a state of transition as they look to reshape their roster.

GCN reported Monday that several Ineos Grenadiers riders were set for contract extensions, including Geraint Thomas and Carlos Rodríguez. Thomas finished second in the Giro d’Italia this year, while Rodriguez won a stage and finished fifth overall at the Tour de France.

US talent AJ August, Tobias Foss, and Óscar Rodríguez are also set to join the British team.
