The crash held up stage 4 of Itzulia Basque Country for nearly an hour
The high-speed downhill crash at Itzulia Basque Country on Thursday left a host of riders with a litany of serious injuries, the extent of which have now become apparent.
There was some warped relief that Jonas Vingegaard initially ‘only’ came away with broken ribs and collarbone, given the amount of time he lay near-motionless before being stretchered away with an oxygen supply. Although on Friday morning his team confirmed that the rider had also suffered suffered a pulmonary contusion and pneumothorax.

There was a similar feeling surrounding Jay Vine, who lay near-motionless in a grassy ditch, when UAE Team Emirates confirmed he had suffered no neurological damage. He has, though, still fractured three vertebrae in his spine. That’s when the severity of the crash and the potential implications really sink in.
Steff Cras (TotalEnergies) was another rider to break bones in his spine, the Belgian having already had torrid time with injuries over the past couple of years. He was seen slumped in the roadside concrete gutter for a long while. He, too, appears to have avoided spinal cord damage but broke several ribs and consequently punctured a lung.

Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost) initially landed upside down in that concrete gutter, Vingegaard having slid into him. The American has broken his sternum and also suffered a nasty head impact as he has a concussion.
Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) remarkably managed to bunny hop the large grassy ditch in which Vine ended up, but couldn’t avoid crashing and slid for a long time on the grass through the trees. He has broken his collarbone and shoulder blade, and will miss the Ardennes Classics, although his Tour de France hopes appear in tact.
The same appears to be the case for Primož Roglič, who suffered his second crash in as many days. The Bora-Hansgrohe rider was back on his feet before long, although he was treading very gingerly indeed and was forced to abandon the race, with his team later confirming only that he had suffered no serious injuries.
Below are the full medical bulletins from the teams of each rider in question.
Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike)
Thursday evening: “Fortunately he is stable and conscious. Examinations at the hospital have revealed that he has a broken collarbone and several broken ribs. He remains in hospital as a precaution."
Friday morning: "Further examination in the hospital revealed that he also suffered a pulmonary contusion and pneumothorax. He is stable and had a good night. He remains in hospital."
Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates)
"Jay Vine suffered a heavy crash today during the race and sustained a cervical and two thoracic spine vertebral body fractures. Thankfully no neurological involvement, and there are no other major injuries or head trauma. Jay will stay in hospital for neurological observation. We await spinal orthopaedic assessment and further management.”
Steff Cras (TotalEnergies)
“After further examinations, Steff Cras suffers from a pneumothorax on the right, several fractured ribs, and two dorsal vertebral fractures, as well as haematomas, wounds and skin abrasions. Our rider will remain in hospital for a few days.”
Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost)
“Sean Quinn suffered a concussion as well as a sternum fracture, abrasions and bruising. He has entered our team’s concussion protocol and will continue to be monitored by our team medical staff.”
Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep)
“Remco Evenepoel was taken to hospital, for medical examination. There it was revealed that the Belgian Champion suffered a fracture to his right collarbone and his right scapula. Remco will travel to Belgium on Friday, where he will undergo an operation on his collarbone, and further examination, at the hospital in Herentals. Further updates will be given in due course.”
Natnael Tesfazion (Lidl-Trek)
“He never lost consciousness, despite the bad crash, but suffered numerous contusions and abrasions on the right part of his body. The medical examinations performed on Natnael revealed no fractures or concussion. Further treatment is currently underway, particularly on the right elbow, the most severe injury sustained by the rider.”
Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe)
“Examinations undertaken at the hospital have shown that he has not sustained any fractures as a result of his fall.
Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck)
“Quinten Hermans was involved, but the damage is limited to some abrasions. Our other riders are okay.”
