Vingegaard, Evenepoel and Roglič involved in serious crash at Itzulia Basque Country

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) were all involved in a major crash on stage 4 of the Itzulia Basque Country.

The incident took place with 35.9km to go, when the peloton were descending at high speed from the summit of the categorised Olaeta climb.

On a tight right hand corner one rider appeared to slide out in the dry conditions, which sparked a chain reaction that took down several more riders.

Evenepoel appeared to land in the grass, while several riders hit a concrete gutter, which was flanked by a couple of large boulders.

Vingegaard appeared to be one of the worst riders affected and several minutes after the crash he remained on the ground as doctors rushed to his aid.

Natnael Tesfatsion (Lidl-Trek) also came down, along with Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates), Alexander Cepeda and Sean Quinn (both EF-Education EasyPost). Quinn and Vine were among those to abandon the race and head to hospital.

UAE Team Emirates released a short statement following the crash regarding their rider.

"Vine is conscious and talking. We will give an update later after further medical checks," the team said.

Evenepoel was holding his collarbone but was able to walk to the medical assistance, while Roglič also looked to be out of the race too. The Slovenian could be seen standing and talking to medical staff on the roadside. He was not taken to hospital immediately and remained inside a team car.

With 27.9km to go, the race was neutralised as Vingegaard was carried from the race on a stretcher, wearing a neck brace. Eurosport reported that 12 riders in total came down in the crash, with six transported to hospital.

Roughly 40 minutes after the crash the ambulances left the scene, heading for the hospital.

Visma-Lease a Bike released the following statement at 17:40 CET: "Update: Jonas is conscious and will be examined in the hospital now. Thank you for your messages. More updates later."

After a lengthy delay, and a period of confusion, the race organisers announced that the peloton would not contest the win but that the six rider break that had been up the road before the crash would race to the finish.

"The race is neutralized until the finish line, the 6 leading riders will compete in the stage but the stage times will not be counted for the general classification. The bunch will go in neutral until the finish line," the organisers posted on X (formerly known at Twitter).

Reuben Thompson (Groupama - FDJ), Louis Meintjes (Intermarché - Wanty), Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies), Mikel Retegi (Equipo Kern Pharma), Joseba López (Caja Rural - Seguros RGA), and Karel Vacek (Burgos - BH) contested the stage. Meintjes was first to cross the line.
