The third stage of the Renewi Tour was a barnstormer of a race around the cobblestones of Flanders as the race took on the classic circuit around the Muur van Geraardsbergen. In a day that was set to be a focal point in the GC battle, the big guns came out blazing with a thrilling and fast day in the Flemish hills.
Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates) was the primary aggressor on the day, storming up the last rep of the Muur and taking a huge chunk of bonus time in the 'green kilometre' that followed. However, he was slowed down by an untimely front flat tyre during the effort. With the race on, and other GC favourites out front with Wellens ahead of the peloton and his team car, the only choice the Belgian had was to ride on with a flat.
And ride on he did, valiantly defending his new virtual lead in the GC and coming across the line in second place, nursing the tyre through the dips and dives of the technical course.
Mike Teunissen (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) ultimately was the winner, stealing a march on the leading group just before the final kilometre. It was a special birthday present for the Dutch rider who has had a tough couple of seasons since his win on the opening stage of the Tour de France in the 2019 Tour de France.
