The Renewi Tour continued on Thursday with an individual time trial around Sluis in the Netherlands. Though short at 13.6km and pan flat, the course was technical, demanding a combination of power and skill to set a good time.
Daan Hoole (Lidl-Trek) set the early fastest time, and sat on the hot seat for some time before being dethroned by Tim Wellens (UAE Team ADQ), who produced arguably the best time trial of his career.
Career best didn't mean anything, though, once Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers) rolled out of the gate. The 19-year-old just finished third at the time trial World Championships, and hasn't finished off the podium in any time trial he's started this year.
The young Brit took almost 15 seconds out of Wellens' time for a result that proved unbeatable, though it was a long wait for the rest of the field to finish and for Tarling's first WorldTour victory to be confirmed.
Wellens' time stood for second, whilst Yves Lampaert (Soudal Quick-Step) slotted into third. Tarling took the race lead with three stages remaining.
