The National Cycling League (NCL) Cup returned for its last instalment on Sunday and once again the racing produced a different machination of racing from the men's and women’s teams of the series. This time, the teams were at an auto racing track for a VIP event on the outskirts of Atlanta to crown the final victor of the series.
In the women’s race, the racing was dominated by a small breakaway that escaped without the two NCL-branded teams that had hoovered up all the points until that point. This go around, the Miami Nights and Denver Disruptors seemed content to simply mark each other and give the smaller teams a chance to take the majority of the laps. Those smaller squads – CCB PB Levine Law Group and Fount Cycling – were not within touching distance in the overall and had men’s teams that had struggled to score any points in the first three rounds.
Thus, the race and the series came down to the men’s event where breakaways once again dominated the proceeding. Nevertheless, this time Denver and Miami were present and fought tooth and nail to decide the final champions of the race and the series. On the last lap, it was all to play for with Miami’s Clever Martinez set to square off with Reinardt Janse van Rensburg for the team title. Unfortunately, Van Rensburg had a mechanical after he started his sprint and Martinez breezed to the win, claiming the race and series for the Miami Nights.
