The Vuelta a España had its second sleepy day in a row with a long trek to the coast on tap for stage 5. The day had few significant climbs, however, the peloton seemed set on a sprint with only one rider making up the days breakaway: Eric Fagundez (Burgos-BH).
Fagundez soldiered on throughout most of the day, but with a gap that never crept over six minutes he was never truly a threat to the sprinters' teams. On the category 2 climb of the day, KOM leader Eduardo Sepulveda (Lotto-Dstny) jumped from the peloton and bridged up to Fagundez. Nevertheless, they both were reeled in on the descent and the table was set for a bunch sprint.
In the final, Kaden Groves, bolstered by a strong Alpecin-Deceuninck line-up, claimed his second consecutive win ahead of an incredibly spirited challenge from Fillipo Ganna (Ineos-Grenadiers). It was a close finish, but in the end the sprinter was able to beat the time trialist on the line with a well timed bike throw.
In the final kilometres, Remco Evenepoel was able to gain time on his rivals on the GC by picking up the six second bonus at a sprint with 11km to go. He now has a 11 second lead on Enric Mas (Movistar).
