Filippo Ganna

Filippo Ganna is a powerhouse from Italy who is both one of the world's best time trialists and track pursuit riders. With multiple time trial world titles to pair with his multiple gold medals on the track, Ganna has quickly established himself as the pre-eminent force in the cycling disciplines where aerodynamics meets raw power.

Ganna started his career on the track as a part of the Italian national programme. With one eye firmly on the Olympics in Tokyo, Ganna’s road career started slowly at UAE Team Emirates in 2017. Most of his results were middling, however, there were glimmers of his potential shown throughout his first two seasons with the UAE outfit. In 2019, Ganna made the jump to Team Sky and with that move came a change in his result sheet. Instead of placing in or around the top 5 in time trials, Ganna began to reliably find himself on the podium and winning tests against the clock.

In 2020, Ganna took another step up, winning four stages of the Giro d’Italia – including all three of the individual time trials – as well as his first rainbow jersey. Ganna had another successful season the following year, winning the Olympic gold medal in the team pursuit, a second time trial world championship and two more stages of the Giro. While 2022 saw a dip in performance on the road, he was able to set both the individual pursuit world record and the hour record on the track, before netting his first Monument podium at the 2023 Milano-Sanremo.

Ganna finally backed up the expectations that had weighed on him in the cobbled Classics, finishing sixth at Paris-Roubaix in the spring, before taking his first GC victory at the Tour de Wallonie in July. Despite falling short of taking another time trial world championship in Scotland, Ganna sealed the gold medal in the individual pursuit and turns his attention to the Vuelta a España for the second half of the season. He will hope to support Geraint Thomas' bid for the podium in Spain, with a team time trial proving his first target on the opening day.
