Rubie and Joseph on their way to the ceremony
On Saturday, September 9, on the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, Joseph and Rubie rode from their homes to their wedding ceremony in Karen.
The bride, accompanied by her bridal party, met the groom and his ushers along the way, and together they rode the final few kilometres to the ceremony.
The bride rode in her wedding gown, which - in the short video of them riding that has garnered thousands of views over the weekend - looks perilously close to the rear wheel of her hardtail mountain bike. The groom, dressed in a suit and bow tie, rode alongside on a gravel bike.
Despite flapping bridal gowns, the pair made it to the ceremony safely, in part thanks to the procession of cyclists who accompanied them on their ride, protecting the couple from the busy urban traffic.
Speaking to Kenyan news outlet Tuko, the bride revealed that the couple met through cycling.
"Cycling is at the heart of our love story and a passion we both share. We met while cycling with the ExtraMilers cycling club. We are both passionate about cycling as a hobby and as a way to keep fit."
But why cycle to your own wedding? For Rubie, cycling is the perfect metaphor for life.
"We believe life is like a bicycle; for one to have balance, one needs to keep pedalling, and what better way than to do that with your lifetime partner and the love of your life?"
