British Cycling has unveiled new awards to celebrate volunteers

British Cycling has revealed four new awards to celebrate those who volunteer in the sport ahead of its annual ceremony later this year.

The new award categories, which are designed to “recognise remarkable achievement and service within our community”, include ‘values champion’, ‘connecting the community’, ‘inspiring future generations’ and ‘young volunteer of the year’. Nominations for the awards aren’t yet open, with further details set to be announced by British Cycling during its Volunteers’ Week at the beginning of June.

“The awards have been designed to recognise the amazing commitment and service of volunteers across our community, whether they’re supporting racing, participation programmes and clubs, or children and young people,” British Cycling said in a press release.

The new additions join a host of other awards that are up for grabs at British Cycling’s annual awards ceremony, which will be held on 26 October.

Among them will be new inductees to the British Cycling Hall of Fame. Launched in 2009, it “recognises extraordinary achievement and exemplary service within the British cycling community” and is only currently home to 69 members, including Beryl Burton, Chris Boardman and Sir Chris Hoy.

Nominations, which can be submitted on British Cycling’s website until 13 June, can be made in one of two categories. The first is for those who have competed in the sport, while the second is for those who have displayed exemplary service, which British Cycling defines as having served “the interests of the sport at both a national and international level”.

As future members will only be inducted at the end of Olympic and Paralympic years, it’ll be the final time anyone will be inducted until the end of 2028.
