The race for the red jersey at this year's Vuelta is incredibly close, and the stage 11 time trial is a perfect opportunity to gain a real edge in the GC rankings. As usual, there are no days off for the mechanics at the Vuelta a España, using the rest day to prepare the time trial bikes for optimum performance.
Klas Johansson and the Vacansoleil crew kindly showed us the painstaking work that goes into ensuring the bikes are ready to go for Stage 11's time trial.
Along with adhering to the UCI's weight and size restrictions for TT bikes, all nine riders have their own specific sets of requirements, as Klas explains. Everything from the front end to the chainrings and deraileurs will be adapted to an exact specification.
We were particularly interested that Liewe Westra will run a 58/44 on stage 11 - certainly not your average setup!
